Week 10 - Everyone is Unique

Week 10 Tip for the Kids:

If you had to pick one sport or physical activity as your favorite, what would it be? Did you pick football, volleyball, baseball, softball, or volleyball? Maybe you chose something different like dance, kickball, karate, or BMX biking. It’s OK not to like the sports that everyone else likes. Did you know that there are athletes in the Olympics who compete at walking as fast as they can? I bet there are a lot of activities that you enjoy. Ask your parents and teachers what their favorite activity is. You may be surprised to hear their answer.

Week 10 Tip for the Captains:

In your own goal to stay active, it is easy to start comparing yourself with others. Maybe you want to run as long as the person on the treadmill next to you or you want to lift as much as your work-out partner. The problem is that we’re not all the same! We each progress at a different rate and we each enjoy different things. The great thing about staying active is that there are so many different activities and you can pick the one you like.

Sporty’s Corner

Penguin Shuffle
Here's an amusing race that challenges kids' balancing skills “penguin-style”. You will need a beanbag or hacky sack-style footbag. Have the children stand side by side with their "eggs" (footbags) on top of their feet. Players try to shuffle across the room without dropping their "eggs." The first one to succeed wins.  Try adding "penguin-style" to other activities. It won't seem like exercise if they are having so much fun shuffling!
