WELCOME! We are excited to have you involved in the N-Lighten Kids Program and want to especially welcome those coordinators and participants joining us from the All Recreate on Fridays (ARF) Movement. We will be posting new tips weekly to assist you and your group in making more physically active and healthier choices. Good Luck!!
Beginning Instructions:
If you haven't already, you should be receiving your wall chart(s) soon. At this time, especially if you're having the kids record their own points, we recommend you print an Activity Tracker for each child. Record activity points on the tracker daily, then enter the weekly totals on the wall chart. To be eligible for monthly drawings, we'll need you to log on and report the team totals at least once per month.
Week 1 Tip for the Captains:
How does that old saying go? Rome wasn’t built in a day. That line of thinking holds very true to starting a physical fitness routine. Two things often happen when people decide to start a new commitment to a healthier lifestyle. First, they look for something that will be a quick fix. We’ve all been there. We want everything quickly and with as little work as possible. The other thing that happens is that people starting out do too much too fast. It’s important to be realistic about your current fitness level. Remember to go slowly and build solid, sustainable habits. This is achieved by making small changes - don’t rush it. Choose one healthy habit to work on each week.
Week 1 Tip for the Kids:
Know the recommendations! Each of you should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. The 60 minutes should include some muscle strengthening activities like push-ups or gymnastics and bone strengthening activities like jumping rope or running at least 3 days per week. How do you know you’re working hard enough? Use a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is sitting and 10 is doing something as hard as you can. You should be rating yourself at 5 or 6 during the whole 60 minutes. So, make sure to get your 60 minutes in each day. You can play ball, skip, play tag, go for a walk, skateboard, or anything else that’s fun for you!
Sporty’s Corner
Hot Valentine All players must sit in a circle with their legs crossed. In the middle is the leader holding the Hot Valentine. The leader will decide whom to throw the Hot Valentine to and then close their eyes. The players will then toss the Hot Valentine to each other around the circle until the leader calls “Hot Valentine”. The person holding it will be out but first starts the game by tossing it to another player. The last person without the Hot Valentine is the winner.
